Type, Image , Composition 6: Physical Typography
For this workshop a loaf of sliced bread is required. With the
loaf the task was to, in pairs, create an alphabet to ultimately be turned into
a stop motion animation of all 26 letters. Considering the material we have (bread)
what limitations this sets and equally what does it leave open for exploration.
Starting with a letter like “R” (which contains components that can be used in
other letters such as the stem, bowl/counter and a leg/tail) experiment with
the different ways in which you can build a letter with bread. The scale of the
font must be larger than a single slice of bread to allow for more creative and
experimental thinking. After trying to make the letters flat and building them up
we settled on a way of building each letter from squares of bread
(approximately 1/6 of a slice) this method was taken forward to create the stop
motion animation of all 26 letters.
