After Effects 6: Showreel

For the final After Effects workshop the aim is to create a showreel displaying the work that I have produced so far this year in the previous five After Effects workshops. The showreel is to be approximately 30 seconds long, half the length of a traditional industry standard showreel of 60 seconds. However, 30 seconds seems a more appropriate length of time for a student who has only been creating motion graphics in the past year and a half. The showreel was created by importing the high-resolution renders of previous animations into After Effects, clipping them down and arranging them into an appropriate order. It was suggested we started with a good animation, then follow up with an even better animation, then add the ones that aren’t as good but maybe show off certain skills, then finish up with another good animation, as the lasting memory from the showreel. I then added a title and end screen to the animation along with a transition between each part of the showreel. To introduce each animation, I added a lower third, lower thirds were originally developed for news shows, because if people are present, they are typically shown in the top two thirds of the screen, so adding a lower third to the screen doesn’t interfere with the people in shot. My lower third introduces the title of each of the workshops I added to the showreel.
